The pygmy pikeconger〔(Common names of ''Nettenchelys pygmaea'' ) at www.fishbase.org.〕 (''Nettenchelys pygmaea'') is an eel in the family Nettastomatidae (duckbill/witch eels).〔(''Nettenchelys pygmaea'' ) at www.fishbase.org.〕 It was described by David G. Smith and James Erwin Böhlke in 1981.〔Smith, D. G., J. E. Böhlke and P. H. J. Castle, 1981 (20 July) (6158 ) ''A revision of the nettastomatid eel genera Nettastoma and Nettenchelys (Pisces: Anguilliformes), with descriptions of six new species.'' Proceedings of the Biological Society of Washington v. 94 (no. 2): 533-560.〕 It is a marine, tropical eel which is known from the western central Atlantic Ocean, including Venezuela and the Gulf of Mexico, and possibly more locations.〔 It is known to dwell at a depth range of . Males can reach a maximum total length of .〔
The species epithet "''pygmaea''", meaning "small" in Greek, refers to the small size of mature specimens.〔
